Elderberry (Adams) - (sambucus canadensis 'adams') - Vigorous grower features very large flower heads. Ripens about two weeks earlier than John. Elderberry is high in vitamins and antioxidants making it a great edible plant to add to the landscape. White flower clusters appear in Spring followed by soft juicy purple/ black berries in August. Both flowers and berries are edible. Commonly made into syrup, wine, and jellies. Elderberry need adequate pollination to produce a good supply of berries, plant with John to ensure a good crop. Plant in full sun with good drainage. Prefers a well drained loamy soil, but is easy to grow. Should produce berries in the 2nd year. Reaches a height of up to about 12' tall x 8' wide. Perennial zones 3-9. One live plant in 3" container.
